Democrats Win Key US Races as Zohran Mamdani Becomes New York’s First Muslim Mayor
Democrats scored sweeping victories across the United States on Tuesday in a string of pivotal local elections — the first major electoral test of President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
In a historic outcome, Zohran Mamdani, a left-leaning Democratic socialist and state assemblyman, was projected by NBC, CBS, and CNN to win the New York City mayoral race, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani’s victory makes him New York’s first Muslim mayor, a milestone seen as a powerful symbol of the city’s growing progressive movement and demographic diversity.
Across the river in New Jersey, Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill also emerged victorious in the gubernatorial race, according to U.S. media projections. The former Navy pilot and national security expert defeated Republican businessman Jack Ciattarelli, in what analysts viewed as a key test of Trump’s political influence following his re-election.
Democrats also notched a landmark win in Virginia, where Abigail Spanberger became the state’s first female governor. The moderate three-term congresswoman and former CIA officer was projected to defeat Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, a prominent Trump ally and Marine veteran, by a decisive margin.
Taken together, the trio of Democratic victories — in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia — signaled a strong showing for the opposition party and highlighted shifting voter sentiment across several key states. The results are being widely interpreted as a political warning sign for Trump’s administration as it begins its second term in the White House.
