Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has described Detty December as a cultural movement that has grown beyond any individual, stressing that its core message is about reconnecting with one’s roots and enjoying life with purpose.

He spoke at Detty Rave 2025, the official closing party of Entertainment Week Lagos (EWL), where he reflected on the origins of the now-global December festivities.

“In 2016, me and my guys, we invented Detty December, and it is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally,” Mr Eazi said. “Detty December is bigger than Mr Eazi, bigger than anybody.”

His remarks set the tone for a night that went beyond a typical end-of-year party, celebrating culture, community and legacy.

Held beneath a towering neon-lit Choplife Griot Mask sculpture, Detty Rave 2025 attracted a massive crowd and featured surprise performances by J Hus, Shallipopi and King Promise, highlighting the pan-African spirit behind the movement.

One of the standout moments came when Davido took over DJ duties, keeping the energy high before inviting Ghanaian viral dancer AnanzoJ on stage. Their appearance followed Davido’s widely reported $5,000 gift to the dancer earlier in the year, reinforcing the cross-border unity associated with Detty December.

Looking to the future, Mr Eazi announced plans to invest $2 million in a 3,000-capacity creative venue in Ghana. He called on the Ghana Tourism Authority to provide land for the project, noting that such infrastructure is vital for the continued growth of African entertainment.

Staying true to his “Choplife” philosophy, Mr Eazi also rewarded fans during the event, sharing a total of GH₵30,000 with audience members throughout the night.
