As Nigeria closes out 2025, the naira has recorded a mild appreciation against the US dollar in both the official and parallel markets, ending the year on a steadier footing compared with the sharp swings experienced earlier in the year.

Official market

At the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the naira opened trading at about ₦1,450.30 per dollar, improving on the previous day’s closing rate of ₦1,457.42. During early trading, the exchange rate moved within a narrow band, peaking at ₦1,457.42 and easing to a low of ₦1,447.30.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has continued to rely on price discovery at the NFEM, with the closing rate still around ₦1,450.30. Analysts attribute the relative calm to improved liquidity and reduced corporate demand as many businesses wind down operations for the year-end holidays.

Parallel market

In the parallel, or black, market, the naira also showed signs of stability, with Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in Lagos—particularly Ikeja and Broad Street—and Abuja’s Wuse Zone 4 quoting the dollar at between ₦1,460 and ₦1,475.

Although rates in the parallel market remain higher than the official window, the margin has narrowed considerably compared with the highs seen earlier in 2025. Traders say demand for travel-related transactions persists, but speculative pressures have eased significantly.

As Nigeria looks ahead to 2026, narrowing the gap between official and parallel market rates remains a priority for the federal government’s economic team. Analysts note that sustained oil output and steady foreign portfolio inflows could help the naira retain its current stability into the first quarter of the new year.
