Drones Spotted Over Denmark’s Largest Military Base Amid Fears of Hybrid Attacks
Unidentified drones were seen flying over Denmark’s Karup military base, prompting airport closures amid rising fears of hybrid attacks. Police and military launch investigation.
Unidentified drones were seen flying over Denmark’s largest military base, authorities confirmed Saturday, marking the latest in a wave of mysterious sightings that officials have described as part of a “hybrid attack.”
The unexplained drone activity has already forced the temporary closure of several airports across Denmark since Monday, when the first incidents were reported.
“I can confirm that we had an incident around 8:15 pm (1815 GMT Friday) that lasted for some hours. One to two drones were observed outside and over the airbase,” duty officer Simon Skelsjaer told AFP, referring to the Karup military base.
Skelsjaer added that police could not comment on the drones’ origin. “We didn’t take them down,” he said, noting that police are working with the military on the investigation.
The Karup base shares runways with Midtjylland civilian airport, which was briefly closed during the incident. No flights were disrupted, as no commercial departures or arrivals were scheduled at the time.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had earlier warned that “over recent days, Denmark has been the victim of hybrid attacks,” pointing to unconventional methods of warfare targeting the country.
