Eberechi Eze opened his Arsenal account on Wednesday as the Gunners defeated Port Vale 2-0 to book their place in the League Cup fourth round, joining Manchester City, Tottenham, and Newcastle.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta rotated heavily, making nine changes from Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Manchester City, with Eze, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli among those starting.

Eze, who joined from Crystal Palace last month in a deal worth up to £68 million ($92m), struck just eight minutes in, slotting home from Myles Lewis-Skelly’s flick to give the visitors an early lead. Despite dominating possession, Arsenal failed to extend their advantage until the 85th minute, when Leandro Trossard sealed victory with a clinical strike into the bottom corner.

Port Vale’s best chance came through Devante Cole, son of ex-Manchester United striker Andy Cole, but his effort narrowly cleared the bar.

Elsewhere, Phil Foden inspired Manchester City with a goal and assist in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield. The England international fired in the opener after 18 minutes before setting up Savinho’s decisive strike 15 minutes from time.

Holders Newcastle cruised past Bradford 4-1, with Joelinton and William Osula both scoring twice, while Tottenham eased to a 3-0 victory over Doncaster. Joao Palhinha netted with an overhead kick, Jay McGrath scored an own goal, and Brennan Johnson added a third in stoppage time.
