Editors Urge FG, Security Agencies to Track Down Killers of Arise News Reporter Somtochukwu
The Nigerian Guild of Editors has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to track down the killers of Arise News journalist Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, murdered in an Abuja robbery. The Guild links her death to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to swiftly identify and bring to justice the killers of Arise News reporter, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was murdered during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild described Somtochukwu’s death as a tragic loss to journalism. It noted that she was a passionate and dedicated professional who consistently gave voice to the voiceless and embodied the future of the profession in Nigeria.
“The loss of this vibrant journalist to an armed robbery incident is a stark reminder of the dangers Nigerians face daily in their homes and on the streets,” the statement read. “By Somtochukwu’s untimely death, journalism has lost not just a good professional but also one who represented the future of journalism in the country.”
The Guild linked her killing to the worsening state of insecurity across the nation, pointing to rising incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, insurgency, and other violent crimes that continue to instill fear and uncertainty among citizens.
It called on the government and security agencies to address the root causes of insecurity while ensuring the safety of lives and property. The Guild further demanded that those behind Somtochukwu’s murder be tracked, apprehended, and prosecuted without delay.
“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with Arise News and the broader journalism community,” the NGE stated, adding that the late reporter’s dedication should serve as an enduring inspiration to pursue excellence in journalism, even under difficult circumstances.
The Guild prayed for the repose of Somtochukwu’s soul and described her as a talented journalist whose promising career was cut short in her prime.
