Egypt secured a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Nigeria in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) friendly held in Cairo on Tuesday night, just days ahead of the tournament.

The Pharaohs took the lead in the 28th minute when Mahmoud Saber, set up by the dangerous Zizo, tapped in at the back post. Zizo was a constant threat to the Nigerian defence throughout the match.

Nigeria struggled for cohesion in attack but nearly equalized when Paul Onuachu’s long ball forced an almost-own goal from Yasser Ibrahim, only prevented by a sharp save.

Moments later, Nigeria found the breakthrough. Zaidu’s free kick struck Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, who fumbled, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to head home from close range and level the score.

After the break, Egypt came out with renewed energy. Zizo’s brilliant play created space for Mostafa Mohamed, who drilled the ball into the net from inside the box, restoring Egypt’s lead.

Nigeria were unable to respond, as Egypt controlled the remainder of the match to secure the win.
