Ekwunife, APGA Chairman Trade Blame Over Voting Disruption in Anambra Community
APC’s Uche Ekwunife accuses APGA of hiring thugs to disrupt voting in Nri, Anaocha LGA, while APGA’s chairman Anthony Ugorji denies the claim, saying the election later resumed peacefully.
The Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has accused the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) of instigating the tension that disrupted voting in Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, during Saturday’s election.
Speaking to journalists in Nri, Ekwunife claimed that the unrest at Ward 1, Polling Units 001, 002, and 003 was triggered by alleged thugs hired by APGA to interfere with the voting process at her polling centre.
She, however, praised the swift intervention of Nri youths and the professional conduct of security personnel, saying their prompt action restored peace and enabled voting to resume after a brief suspension.
Ekwunife also decried widespread vote-buying across several polling units, calling it a “disturbing reflection of the immaturity of some politicians.”
“Why resort to inducement if you truly intend to serve the people?” she asked. “Representatives of some major parties were seen openly distributing money to influence voters. This is unacceptable. Authorities must take stronger measures against vote-buying to ensure credible leadership.”
In response, the APGA Chairman in Anaocha LGA, Chief Anthony Ugorji, denied the allegations, insisting that his party did not deploy anyone to disrupt the process.
“I was informed about the incident but did not witness it personally,” Ugorji said. “The situation was quickly brought under control, and voting eventually continued peacefully.”
