El-Rufai Debunks Claims on 2027 Presidency, Labels Reports Fake
Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed reports claiming he endorsed a region for Nigeria’s 2027 presidency, describing the claims as fake news and urging media verification.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Monday dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he had stated which region should produce Nigeria’s president in 2027.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, El-Rufai described the claims as “fake news,” insisting that he never made such remarks in any speech, interview, or social media engagement.
He clarified that his views should only be attributed to him when they are expressed through his official social media platforms or granted interviews with recognised media organisations.
El-Rufai also cautioned against wrongly attributing opinion articles written by other authors to him simply because he shared them, noting that such misrepresentation undermines meaningful national discourse.
“These caveats are crucial as we confront both irresponsible politicking and the deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news,” he said.
The former governor further criticised media outlets and senior editors who publish unverified information, accusing them of fueling what he described as an “unedifying olympics of fiction and fakery” on social media.
“The wilful attribution to me of claims I did not make by a fake news platform is no excuse to treat such platforms with any seriousness,” he added, urging greater responsibility in information dissemination.
El-Rufai concluded by stressing the need for thorough verification before sharing information, especially at a time when misinformation and deliberate falsehoods are widespread.
