Elon Musk’s X Rolls Out New Feature Showing Users’ Country of Origin
X, formerly Twitter, has introduced a new feature that displays the country linked to user accounts to boost transparency and curb misinformation. The update, still in limited rollout, includes expanded account details and optional privacy controls for showing only a region or continent.
X (formerly Twitter) has begun deploying a new feature that displays the country where an account is based — an update advocates say will help curb misinformation, foreign interference, and coordinated propaganda on the platform.
The feature, which started appearing on Friday, November 21, 2025, is still in limited release. Users who have access can view an account’s bio, tap on the “Joined” date, and see the country linked to that profile.
X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, previously explained in October that the addition aims to improve users’ ability to verify the authenticity of content and accounts.
The latest update also gives some users access to expanded account information, including verification status, creation date, country of registration, the number of times the username has been changed, and the app store country tied to the account.
Supporters of the rollout believe it will help identify accounts involved in engagement farming, impersonation, or coordinated disinformation efforts.
But privacy advocates have raised concerns, noting that some users may not want to disclose their specific country. In response, X has introduced an option allowing users to show only their region or continent rather than a precise country location.
