Enugu Governor Peter Mbah Joins APC, Ends PDP’s 25-Year Dominance
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially defected from the PDP to the ruling APC, citing the need to “reshape Enugu and reorganize the state’s politics.” His entire cabinet joined the move, signaling a major political shift.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking one of the most significant political realignments in the state’s history.
Mbah announced his defection in a televised address on Tuesday, saying the decision followed deep reflection on the future of Enugu and its political direction.
“Today, after a long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” he declared.
The governor explained that his move was driven by a desire to “reshape Enugu and reorganize the politics of the state.”
“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead,” Mbah said. “This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our project and our people. Leadership sometimes demands painful decisions in the service of higher principles and goals. And there comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny.”
The announcement came just a day after all members of the Enugu State Executive Council publicly defected to the APC.
Governor Mbah’s Senior Media Aide, Dan Nwomeh, confirmed the development in a video shared on his social media pages on Monday. The footage showed commissioners, aides, and other top government officials chanting pro-APC slogans and expressing solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Enugu State Cabinet Members join the APC with full chest along with Governor PN Mbah,” Nwomeh wrote.
In the video, the officials could be heard declaring:
“We are now in APC; tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way; from top to bottom.”
The collective defection represents a major political shift in Enugu, a state that has remained a PDP stronghold since 1999. Analysts say Mbah’s move could reshape the region’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
