Enugu LG Chairman Suspends Akatakpa Masquerade After Violence in Community
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ukwueze explained that the suspension came after consultations with security agencies and traditional leaders. He stressed that the action was taken to prevent cultural practices from being misused in ways that threaten public safety.
The Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Enugu State, Barr. Ferdinand Ukwueze, has suspended all Akatakpa masquerade activities in the Iheakpu-Awka community for the remainder of 2025.
This decision follows a disturbing incident on Monday, August 18, in the Ezzi community, where a commuter from Kogi State was reportedly assaulted during a masquerade procession and later hospitalized.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ukwueze explained that the suspension came after consultations with security agencies and traditional leaders. He stressed that the action was taken to prevent cultural practices from being misused in ways that threaten public safety.
“Our culture must be a source of unity and pride, not fear or disorder,” Ukwueze stated. “We are committed to preserving our traditions in ways that promote peace and respect for all.”
He further warned that any Akatakpa masquerade violating the suspension order would face legal consequences, and directed security agencies to ensure full enforcement of the ban in the affected areas.
While reaffirming the council’s respect for cultural heritage, Ukwueze emphasized that traditional practices must not be allowed to foster violence, intimidation, or human rights abuses.
