Enugu: The Impunity And Irresponsibility Of The Nigerian Army -By Jeff Okoroafor

I am tired, quite frankly, of constantly singing this song of lamentation. Ndigbo need a very strong and reliable individual that can protect the lives and properties of its people – not a yes sir man as Governor.

Nigerian Army

What happened in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu state yesterday where a bloodthirsty, machine gun wielding men from the Nigerian Army acted like a killer squad, is the hardest, most vicious form of official banditry I have ever seen in my life. In what sane country will the Army be drafted to indiscriminately kill civilians in such horrific manner?! If you haven’t seen the video, go search for it and watch the heinous crime committed by these callous personnel of the Nigerian army – two sets of machine gun carriers and their assistants, poised to wipe out that community for no reason whatsoever. What they did in Enugu state, the evil that they committed, cannot be described.

The annoying part wasn’t just that they shot directly and indiscriminately at buildings where people live in, but that they had the temerity to record it themselves, speaking Hausa language while doing so…in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country that’s already engulfed in both ethnic and religious tension.

This level of witchery and impunity has never been seen before. And I wonder what these Southeast Governors are doing! It deeply baffles me.

When the Nigerian Army conduct operation in such an irresponsible and murderous manner, shouldn’t they be held to account? I checked the news few hours after I saw the video, checked several hours later and checked again before penning down this piece, the Governor of the State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is yet to say a word on this. He’s mum and unbothered.

I am tired, quite frankly, of constantly singing this song of lamentation. Ndigbo need a very strong and reliable individual that can protect the lives and properties of its people – not a yes sir man as Governor.
