European Union leaders on Saturday issued a warning over US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European countries as leverage in his bid to purchase Greenland.

In a joint statement, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa responded hours after Trump threatened several European nations with tariffs of up to 25 percent.

“Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral,” they said in a post on social media.

“Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty,” the statement added.

The warning comes days after officials from Denmark and Greenland held talks in Washington with US representatives over Trump’s proposal to acquire the Arctic territory, discussions that ended without an agreement.

“The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland,” the statement said.

It also stressed the importance of continued engagement, noting: “Dialogue remains essential, and we are committed to building on the process begun already last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the US.”
