Everyone Needs Human Companion -By Charles Ogbu

Living alone can be quite cool. It offers you all the privacy you desire. And for someone like myself who’s always lived alone, I’ve come to dread sharing my space with any other living thing. Except my 2 beautiful dogs, of course. Those ones are my ever dependable allies that have given me more happiness than some humans.

But,

Last night, something happened that made me realize everyone needs human companions.

I had a bathroom accident that left my waist in bad shape, although I feel better now (at least I can walk). If my head had taken the hit my waist took last night, I’m very certain I wouldn’t be here writing this.

I had almost finished bathing when I heard my phone ring and was rushing from the bathroom to go pick up when I slipped and saw myself falling backward. My dogs knew there was a problem because they gathered around me and were barking but that was as far as their help could go. I just lay there, writhing in pain.

As I woke up this morning, I couldn’t help thinking what if I had landed with my head as against my waist? Before writing this, I got a text from a good man here with whom I had scheduled a visit today to the community in Emene, Enugu, opposite Caritas university, shown in a viral video by Agbalanze and lucky Udu, living in a condition unbefitting of even rats in the 21st century (most of you may have watched the video). If last night had gone south for me, this my good man would have called and called and called to no avail. The bigger tragedy would be that no one would even had known until days if not weeks because no one knows exactly where I live except two people; a reverend father and a journalist, both of whom don’t regularly visit.

Everyday, life gives us a reason to be humble and understand that any day above the earth is a blessing. You can be here today and the next second, you are gone. I do hope we are always conscious of this.
