Eze Restates Senate Ambition for Enugu North, Calls for Electoral Reforms
Former APC senatorial candidate Ambassador Ejike Eze says he remains interested in representing Enugu North in the Senate, calling for electoral reforms and credible democratic processes.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Enugu North Senatorial District in the 2023 elections, Ambassador Ejike Eze, has said he remains determined to represent the district at the National Assembly.
Speaking in Nsukka, Enugu State, Eze said his continued interest in elective office is driven by a desire to reform Nigeria’s electoral process, curb godfatherism, reduce the influence of money in politics and promote free, fair and non-violent elections.
He expressed concern that Nigeria’s elections have long been characterised by violence, rigging and irregularities, noting that little progress has been made in addressing the challenges since the 1980s.
Drawing from his international experience, Eze said elections in countries such as Ghana, Portugal, Cuba and Germany are conducted efficiently, with outcomes reflecting the will of voters and results announced promptly.
He criticised what he described as politics of imposition and prolonged post-election litigation, arguing that extended court battles distract elected officials from governance. He called for reforms that would ensure all election disputes are resolved before candidates are sworn into office.
Eze maintained that he remains the APC’s senatorial candidate for Enugu North, noting that his name is still listed on the party’s portal as the 2023 flagbearer.
“I was the candidate of the party in 2023, and I remain interested in my candidature, especially now that there is a vacancy in the senatorial seat of Enugu North following the demise of Senator Okey Ezea,” he said.
The former ambassador also described Governor Peter Mbah as the leader of the APC in Enugu State, adding that he is willing to serve in the Senate with the governor’s consent.
He stressed that his ambition is not rooted in imposition but in popular choice, insisting that any candidate must emerge through consultation, dialogue and consensus among stakeholders in the district and within the party at both state and national levels.
Eze urged stakeholders in Enugu North Senatorial District and APC leaders to support the emergence of a credible candidate who would effectively represent the interests of the people.
