FCT Police Commissioner Ajao Adewale confirms Arise TV anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu died after jumping from her 3rd-floor apartment during an armed robbery in Katampe, Abuja. Investigation underway to track suspects.
The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ajao Adewale, has confirmed that Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, lost her life after jumping from the third floor of her Katampe apartment during an armed robbery attack on Monday.
According to vigilantes at the scene, Maduagwu jumped from the top floor of the three-storey building and landed on the hard cemented floor, leaving her unconscious before she was rushed to the hospital.
Speaking on Arise TV, CP Adewale said police officers found Maduagwu unconscious and quickly moved her to Maitama General Hospital.
“Policemen moved to the scene and found her lying unconscious. She was immediately taken to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate her using CPR, but sadly, she could not make it,” he said.
The Police Commissioner explained that the robbers invaded Unique Apartments, a three-storey twin building with 18 flats located in the Gishiri area of Katampe, under Mabushi Division.
“Some unknown armed robbers gained access to Unique Apartments where Maduagwu lived. Two private security guards were on duty. One of them, who had the courage to challenge the robbers, sustained a gunshot injury.
“In the panic that followed, Maduagwu, who lived on the topmost floor of the building, jumped down from the third storey. The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate,” Adewale said.
He added that a special investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), has been set up to track down the attackers.
“We have set up a specific investigation team headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Investigation, with all tactical units involved to track down the culprits. The leads we are getting are already being worked on, and no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the Police Commissioner assured.
CP Adewale extended condolences to the family of the late journalist, her colleagues at Arise News, and Nigerians affected by the tragedy.
