The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a series of major road construction and rehabilitation projects worth more than ₦400 billion, aimed at improving Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure and promoting economic growth.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced this on Thursday while briefing journalists after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Umahi said he presented 11 memos to the council — nine for the review of ongoing projects inherited from previous administrations and two for new contract awards.

Among the new approvals was the Phase Two, Section Two of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, valued at ₦43 billion, to fix failed sections and complete pending underpasses and ramps.

He also revealed that the dualisation of the Mushin–NNPC Junction–Papa Oshodi Expressway was revised from ₦11 billion to ₦19 billion due to increased costs and design updates.

The council further approved the construction of Section Three of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, covering 162.97 kilometres from Badagry through Ogun to the Oyo State border, at a rate of ₦3.39 billion per kilometre.

Umahi said several inherited projects such as the Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba road and the old Enugu–Onitsha road were reviewed for redesign and better funding structure.

According to him, the 216-kilometre Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba road has been divided into phases, with 31 kilometres to be completed under Phase One at a cost of ₦43 billion, while the rest will follow when funding improves.

He also disclosed that the East–West Road project had been redesigned to enhance pavement strength and traffic capacity, maintaining a budget of ₦156 billion for its dual carriageways and bridges.

Umahi noted that some state governments have taken over federal road projects within their territories to accelerate delivery and reduce funding strain on the federal government.

The Ota–Idi-Iroko road project in Ogun State was also reviewed — upgraded to rigid concrete pavement and expanded with a new bridge — raising its total cost from ₦38 billion to ₦52 billion.

Other approvals include:

  • Reconstruction of Ijebu–Ibu Ete–Egba–Owena road in Ogun and Ondo States for ₦53 billion.

Umahi reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to durable, concrete-based road construction, emphasizing sustainability, safety, and long-term value for Nigerians.

“Our focus remains delivering durable road infrastructure to support economic growth and ease of movement across the federation,” the minister said.
