FG Hails Simon Ekpa’s Conviction in Finland as ‘Major Victory Against Terrorism’

The Federal Government has hailed the six-year jail sentence handed to pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, describing it as a decisive step in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
On Monday, the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorist acts and associating with a terrorist group. The court ruled that between August 2021 and November 2024, he used his vast social media reach to fuel violence and unrest in Nigeria’s South-East.
Reacting in a statement on X, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called the ruling a “major victory in the war against terror.”
“We welcome the news of Simon Ekpa’s conviction by a Finnish court for terrorism-related crimes, and his sentencing to six years in prison. A major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror,” Idris stated.
Ekpa, who describes himself as a disciple of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, was a key driver of the sit-at-home protests in the South-East — demonstrations that were often violently enforced, leading to the deaths of civilians and security operatives.
Following Kanu’s extradition in 2021, Ekpa briefly served as lead broadcaster for Radio Biafra before being dismissed for violating its code of conduct. He later set up his own breakaway faction.
Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa in November 2024, charging him with spreading terrorist propaganda online. By March 2025, Nigeria formally designated him as a “terrorism financier.”
