The Super Eagles of Nigeria have earned a reputation for keeping fans on edge — often clinching qualification for major tournaments in dramatic, last-day fashion.

As Nigeria prepares for a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic, here’s a look back at five unforgettable occasions when the team’s fate was decided on the final matchday — moments that captured the Eagles’ resilience, grit, and never-say-die spirit.

1. 1994 World Cup Qualifiers – Algeria 1–1 Nigeria (October 8, 1993)

Nigeria made history in Algiers by qualifying for their first-ever FIFA World Cup. The Eagles only needed a draw to edge Ivory Coast, and they did just enough. Finidi George struck early, and despite a late Algerian equaliser, Nigeria held on for a 1–1 result that booked their place at USA ’94 — the start of a golden era featuring legends like Rashidi Yekini, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Sunday Oliseh.

2. 2002 World Cup Qualifiers – Nigeria 3–0 Ghana (July 29, 2001)

With qualification hanging by a thread, Nigeria needed to beat Ghana and hope Liberia slipped up elsewhere. The Super Eagles rose to the occasion in Port Harcourt, cruising to a 3–0 victory thanks to goals from Tijani Babangida and Yakubu Aiyegbeni. When news broke that Liberia had only managed a 1–1 draw, celebrations erupted nationwide — confirming Nigeria’s spot at their third consecutive World Cup.

3. 2010 World Cup Qualifiers – Kenya 2–3 Nigeria (November 14, 2009)

Arguably one of the most nerve-wracking finales in Nigerian football history. Trailing Tunisia in the standings, Nigeria needed an away win in Nairobi and for Tunisia to drop points. Despite falling behind twice, the Eagles roared back with goals from Obafemi Martins and Yakubu Aiyegbeni, before Martins’ dramatic late winner sealed a 3–2 triumph. When word spread that Tunisia had shockingly lost 0–1 to Mozambique, Nigeria’s ticket to the 2010 World Cup was confirmed in stunning fashion.

4. 2013 AFCON Qualifiers – Nigeria 6–1 Liberia (October 13, 2012)

After a tense 2–2 first-leg draw in Monrovia, Stephen Keshi’s men knew they had to deliver in Calabar — and they did in emphatic style. The Super Eagles tore Liberia apart 6–1, with goals from Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, and Ike Uche. That victory secured Nigeria’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations, where they went on to win the 2013 edition — their first continental title in 19 years.

5. 2021 AFCON Qualifiers – Nigeria 3–0 Lesotho (March 30, 2021)

Though already close to qualifying, Nigeria sealed the deal in their final group game in Lagos. Victor Osimhen, Oghenekaro Etebo, and Paul Onuachu were all on target as the Eagles cruised to a 3–0 win over Lesotho, confirming top spot in Group L and extending their proud record of consistent AFCON appearances.

From Algiers in 1993 to Lagos in 2021, the Super Eagles have shown time and again that when it matters most, they find a way to deliver — often turning final-day pressure into unforgettable triumphs.
