Flick Optimistic Fermin Lopez Will Stay at Barcelona Despite Chelsea Links

Flick added, “In the end, it’s a big business. I have to focus on my team, and I’m really happy Fermin plays for Barca. He’s a really important player for us. He showed that last season. His style is different from other players, and he can help us a lot.”

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick expressed confidence that midfielder Fermin Lopez will remain at the club, despite ongoing speculation linking him to a potential move to Chelsea. However, Flick acknowledged he couldn’t be certain of the 22-year-old’s future.

Spanish media have suggested that Lopez, who made his first-team debut during the 2023/24 season, is contemplating leaving the club where he rose through the ranks. Despite this, Flick emphasized that Lopez is a crucial member of Barcelona’s squad as they aim to defend their La Liga title and pursue a Champions League victory for the first time since 2015.

“I spoke with him, I am convinced that he will stay, but in the end, I don’t know what happens — we have to wait. I am really happy when the market is closed,” Flick said in a press conference. “I told him my opinion, but it’s between him and me. Sometimes players have other thoughts — around the players are also a lot of people, who know maybe more than we know.”

Lopez, who scored eight goals in 46 appearances last season, was a key contributor to Barcelona’s domestic treble.

Meanwhile, Barcelona was dealt a setback ahead of their La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, as Gavi was ruled out of the match due to knee discomfort. Flick confirmed that Gavi will also miss Spain’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers but could return for the following match against Valencia in mid-September.

“Our plan is for him to be back for Valencia, but we have to see. From yesterday to today, he’s much better,” Flick said.
