Flood: 5 communities washed off, 2 killed, over 1,000 displaced

In Kaduna State, a flood has devastated villages in Jema’a Local Government Area, including Kafanchan, displacing over 1,000 people and sweeping away two children.

This was revealed by Mrs. Christy Usman, Vice Chairman of Jema’a LGA, during a tour of Southern Kaduna’s impacted areas by the Kaduna State Impact Assessment Committee on Flood.

According to her, farmlands were washed away by the floods that affected portions of Kafanchan Municipal City, Jagindi, Atuku, Aso, and Bade wards, ruining harvests valued at millions of naira.

“The flood has affected the people of Jema’a council economically, but we are happy that, Governor Uba Sani has responded positively by sending the committee chaired by the Chief of Staff, Malam Sani Kila to come and assess the impact of the flood.

“We are happy that the governor is reacting to the plight of the people. We know, with this visit, compensation is coming and relief is coming for the victims of the flood disaster.

“Apart from farm lands washed away by the flood, over 1,000 people were affected. From a canal here in Kafanchan, two children were reported to have been taken away by the flood.

“We are, therefore, hopeful that, the government will bring relief materials to the victims, especially food items, building materials and financial assistance,” she said.

Briefing journalists after visiting the affected communities in Sanga, Jema’a and Kachia councils, Chairman of the Committee and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Malam Kila said thousands of people need immediate assistance.
