Fofana: ‘Small Details’ Costing Chelsea as Leads Slip Again
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana says “small details” are holding the Blues back after a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, as Enzo Maresca’s side continue to drop points from winning positions.
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has pointed to “small details” as the key reason behind the Blues’ recurring failure to hold on to winning positions, following Tuesday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Maresca’s side have now dropped 13 home points from winning positions this season and have managed just one league victory in their last seven matches. The poor run has pushed Chelsea out of the top four, with missed chances once again proving costly against Bournemouth, just days after their defeat to Aston Villa on December 27.
“It was a tough game,” Fofana said after the match. “We tried to give everything but we didn’t kill the game in the second half.
“We had a few chances (which) we didn’t score. We need to kill the game and we need to score. It’s not only about the forward players, it’s everyone.”
Bournemouth struck first through David Brooks in the sixth minute before Cole Palmer restored parity from the penalty spot. Chelsea appeared to be on course for a vital win when Enzo Fernandez fired home a superb strike into the top corner, but defensive lapses allowed Justin Kluivert to tap in unmarked at the far post before half-time.
“We need to do better, we need to analyse and try to progress,” Fofana added. “When you concede two, it’s frustrating… but we are only in December, and we need to progress.
“I think we are getting closer, we are just missing small details.”
Reflecting on Chelsea’s year so far, the French defender said: “It’s been an up-and-down year. We got into the Champions League and we won the Club World Cup, which was good.”
For Bournemouth, the draw extended their winless league run to 10 matches, a slide that has seen them fall from second place in October to 15th. Despite that, Andoni Iraola’s men have lost just once in their last five outings.
Midfielder Alex Scott took encouragement from the performance, saying: “We played much better and showed a lot more fight.
“Coming to a place like Chelsea is never easy. The second half wasn’t amazing in terms of possession, but we defended really well and it was a huge improvement from us.
“To score two set-piece goals is definitely a positive for us.”
