Benue State remains gripped by relentless violence as armed herdsmen and bandits continue to attack rural communities, leaving at least 53 people dead since the beginning of the year and residents in a state of fear.

In Kwande Local Government Area, two traders were murdered on Saturday while returning from Jato-Aka Market to Nzaav community in Yaav Council Ward. Eyewitness accounts indicate the attackers—suspected herdsmen—shot the victims before inflicting severe machete wounds. “Their bodies were later found lying in pools of blood,” a resident recounted.

Former Supervisory Councillor Lawrence Akerigba described the killings as deeply horrifying.
“This is disturbing. The bodies were badly wounded. The attacks are ongoing and show no sign of stopping. This is nothing but terrorism,” he said.
Kwande LGA Chairman, Yarkwan Tersua, confirmed the incident, condemning the repeated killings and suggesting possible religious undertones. He urged the federal government to urgently protect the vulnerable population.

In Zaki-Biam, Logo LGA, a young female POS operator was shot dead when suspected bandits on motorcycles stormed her shop in Hausa Quarters. Witnesses said the assailants seized cash, fired shots into the air, and fled. She was rushed to a hospital but later confirmed dead.

The Tombo community in Logo LGA continues to suffer staggering losses, with over 50 residents reportedly killed so far in 2025. During a condolence visit by Senator Emmanuel Udende, community leaders—including Joseph Tsavsar, Tiza Job, and a traditional ruler—lamented the scale of destruction.
“Over 50 of our people have been killed, and countless others injured. Homes and farms worth millions have been destroyed. Our community, once known for feeding the state, is now a shadow of itself,” they said, appealing for urgent government intervention.

Senator Udende, accompanied by aides Abancha Tsenongo, Martins Agir, and Asawa Moses, assured residents of his commitment to improving security. “I stand with you in this dark moment. The completion of the Police Barracks at Ayilamo will enhance security and help stop these killings,” he added, urging patience as efforts intensify.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for clarification were unsuccessful as he had yet to respond to calls and messages.

Across Benue, anxiety is rising as communities call for swift, decisive action from both state and federal authorities to restore peace and safeguard lives.
