Gbajabiamila: Why I Chose Law After Failing to Join the Military
Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila says he once dreamed of being a soldier but turned to law after failing military recruitment. He revealed this while inaugurating the Bola Tinubu Hall at Albalti Army Barracks, Surulere, Lagos.

Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, on Friday revealed that he had initially aspired to become a soldier but turned to law after unsuccessful attempts to enlist in the military.
Gbajabiamila, who inaugurated a 1,200-seater auditorium named Bola Tinubu Hall at Albalti Army Barracks in Surulere, Lagos, said his admiration for the military remains strong. The project was one of several he facilitated at the barracks.
“I actually wanted to be a soldier, but the problem at recruitment interviews then was either my weight or my size,” he recounted.
“When I looked at the people to my right who were also attempting and looked at the people to my left who also came for the interview, no one needed to tell me to go home. It was when I could not join the military that I became a lawyer. I admire soldiers so much. They are an inspiration to people like us.”
The Chief of Staff praised the armed forces for their sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, protecting democracy, and promoting stability. He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains firmly committed to the welfare of military personnel.
Gbajabiamila said the new auditorium would serve as a multifunctional facility for training, social functions, and other activities, adding that the project was a gesture of appreciation for the military’s role in nation-building.
Surulere Local Government Vice Chairman, Mr. Muiz Dosunmu, also lauded the strong partnership between the council and the Abalti Barracks community. He described Surulere as a leading hub in education, sports, health, and infrastructure, promising continued collaboration.
Lt.-Col. Michael Toriola, Director of Nigerian Army Corps, commended Gbajabiamila for his philanthropy and dedication. “Sir, we appreciate you. This is a true reflection of your commitment to the well-being of officers, our family and men. The completion of this facility (Bola Tinubu Hall) goes beyond mere infrastructure, it represents progress, professionalism and a deep pride in service.”
The inauguration was attended by several APC leaders, including Desmond Elliot, member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency I, alongside senior officers and men of the Nigerian Army.
