Gov. Bago Seeks Tougher Measures Against Informants Fueling Insecurity in Niger State
Niger Governor Muhammad Bago calls for stricter measures against informants aiding criminal groups, linking recent school kidnappings to insider leaks. He urges community cooperation as security agencies intensify rescue efforts and the Emir of Borgu seeks urgent federal intervention.
Niger State Governor, Muhammad Umaru Bago, has expressed strong concern over the growing role of informants in enabling attacks across communities, calling the trend a major obstacle in the fight against insecurity.
During a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, in New Bussa, Governor Bago linked several recent incidents—including the kidnapping of students from St. Mary Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara LGA—to individuals allegedly supplying sensitive information to criminal elements.
The governor stressed that informants play a significant role in sustaining insecurity nationwide and urged that “stiffer measures” be introduced to curb their activities. He reassured the emir and residents that security agencies, working with the state government, are intensifying efforts to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted children.
Bago urged communities to support security operations by providing credible intelligence, while warning against actions or rhetoric that could heighten religious or communal tensions.
“The security agencies are committed, but they cannot succeed without the support of the people. We all need to work together to confront these challenges,” he said.
The Emir of Borgu earlier voiced concern about the rising frequency of attacks, noting that criminal groups continue to operate from parts of the Borgu forest. He appealed for urgent intervention from state and federal authorities to restore security and reclaim the forest for productive use.
The emir also commended Governor Bago for the visit, describing it as a show of leadership, empathy, and commitment to the well-being of the people.
