Gov Otti Says Nnamdi Kanu’s Case Will Be Resolved Administratively After Prison Visit
Abia State Governor Alex Otti says Nnamdi Kanu’s case will be settled through administrative processes. Otti disclosed this after visiting the IPOB leader at Sokoto Correctional Centre, assuring that efforts for his release have intensified and expressing optimism for a peaceful resolution.
Abia State Governor Alex Otti says the ongoing discussions surrounding the conviction and possible release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, are on track to be resolved through administrative processes.
The governor gave the update after visiting Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre over the weekend. Otti noted that he has intensified efforts toward securing Kanu’s release — an engagement he said began shortly after he assumed office in 2023.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor confirmed that he held productive talks with Kanu during the visit.
“Governor Otti, while discussing with Mazi Kanu during the visit, encouraged him to remain strong, assuring him that the engagements he started over two years ago, which the IPOB leader has been aware of, have been intensified in spite of what happened,” the statement read.
Ekeoma added that Otti reassured Kanu to “remain calm but strong,” insisting that the matter “will be resolved administratively” and that Kanu would eventually “regain his freedom.”
Otti also expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shares his position on the importance of Kanu’s release and reducing political tension. He recounted a lighthearted moment during which the Sultan joked about “turbaning” Kanu since he is now under his jurisdiction — a remark that reportedly made Kanu burst into laughter.
Responding, Kanu praised the governor for his steady support and solidarity.
“Kanu, who was beaming with smiles and in high spirits, thanked Governor Otti for the visit and stated that he wasn’t surprised that the Governor quickly came visiting, because he had done the same thing in the past,” the statement noted.
Kanu also commended Otti’s achievements in Abia, comparing them to the legacy of the late Dee Sam Mbakwe of old Imo State.
“He told the Governor that he is very proud of his giant strides in Abia based on the feedback he gets from home… a feat he said is replicating what the late Dee Sam Mbakwe did… and called on the Governor to continue to serve the people diligently.”
The IPOB leader added that his only interest is good governance and anything that improves the welfare of the people. He prayed for God’s guidance over the governor and his administration.
Governor Otti was accompanied by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN; his media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma; and senior officials from the Sokoto State Government. Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, was also in attendance.
