Governments Celebrate International Day of Democracy on X (Twitter)
The Chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bob Menendez said “We honor those democracy advocates, human rights defenders, journalists, and everyone else fighting for freedom around the world.”
Friday 15 September is International Democracy Day, an event started by the United Nations (UN) that is now celebrated in countries all over the world. It was first created in 2007 and aims to highlight what’s good about democracies and to encourage people to keep them alive.
The theme for 2023 is ‘Empowering the Next Generation’, which the UN says is to encourage young people to get involved in democratic processes so they can have their voices heard.
With over 20 million posts (Tweets) “#InternationalDayofDemocracy” is one of the most used terms worldwide on the platform for the day.
The European Commission posted “On Democracy Day, we keep working for a society that is fair, inclusive, and full of opportunity. Instead of millions of people looking for jobs, millions of jobs are looking for people. We need to improve access to the job market, especially for youth and women.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Luxembourg said in a post “Democracy is our shared foundation for peace and progress.“
The Swiss MFA posted “This day is an opportunity to recommit to our shared democratic values & remember that democracy is a constant and ongoing process. Switzerland has a unique constitutional mandate to protect and support democracy across the world”
The Swedish government said “Women’s right to participate in public life freely and safely must be defended. Online and offline.”
The Romanian Government posted via its verified profile “On International Day of Democracy, Romania reaffirms its steadfast commitment to defend and uphold democratic principles and values, especially in the current challenging times. We continue to promote Youth and women empowerment as key to resilient democratic societies”
The Government of the Federal Republic of Lostisland in a post reaffirmed “its commitments” and called for global unity to strengthen democracy and human rights.

Let us stand together and demand accountability and transparency from the ruling regime because Democracy is not a gift, but a responsibility.”
