Gyokeres ‘More Hungry’ After Champions League Brace, Eyes Premier League Momentum
Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres vows to build on his Champions League brace against Atletico Madrid, saying he’s “more hungry” than ever as Mikel Arteta’s side lead the Premier League by three points.
Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres says he is “more hungry” than ever to keep scoring after ending his seven-game goal drought with a superb double in the Gunners’ 4-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
The Swedish forward, who joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon in a £58 million ($77 million) move this summer, took his tally for the club to five goals with his brace at the Emirates Stadium.
Gyokeres’ performance impressed manager Mikel Arteta, who urged him to carry his scoring form into the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
“I’m more hungry now,” Gyokeres said. “You always want to contribute with work rate and other stuff, but when you score goals as well, it’s a bit special. That’s something I always want to do.”
The 27-year-old praised the team’s chemistry and confidence following their third straight European win of the campaign.
“The group we have and the spirit is something different, something very special,” he added. “When you win games and play like this, it builds belief. We just want to keep going like this.”
Arsenal’s defensive solidity shines
Arsenal have now kept three clean sheets in Europe and conceded only three goals in all competitions this season — against Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester City — with just one of those coming from open play in 12 matches.
Goalkeeper David Raya, who has recorded five consecutive shutouts, credited the team’s defensive discipline for their strong start.
“I give clean sheets the same credit as goals,” Raya said. “If we’re keeping clean sheets, it makes games easier to win. It’s really important for the whole team not to give away many chances.”
Raya also praised Arsenal’s squad depth and tactical flexibility under Arteta.
“The depth of the squad is incredible. We have players who can play in two, three, or four positions,” he said. “(Mikel) Merino came on as a striker against Atletico, but he can play as a six, eight, or ten — and the boss uses that variety to our advantage. Everyone knows they have to stay sharp or risk losing their spot.”
Arsenal lead Premier League race
Arsenal remain top of the Premier League, three points ahead of Manchester City and four clear of Liverpool, as they continue their push for a first league title in two decades.
