Hamas Agrees to Release Gaza Hostages Under Trump’s Ceasefire Plan
Hamas says it is ready to release all hostages in Gaza under Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal, but seeks negotiations on details and a role in Gaza’s future governance.
Hamas announced on Friday that it is prepared to release all hostages held in Gaza — both the living and the remains — under the terms of a ceasefire and peace deal proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The group, however, stressed the need for negotiations to clarify details and to secure a role in shaping Gaza’s future.
“The movement announces its approval for the release of all hostages — living and remains — according to the exchange formula included in President Trump’s proposal,” Hamas said in a statement, while signaling readiness to discuss implementation.
The U.S.-backed plan, also supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, includes a ceasefire, hostages’ release within 72 hours, Hamas’s disarmament, and a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
Hamas said it accepted the idea of handing governance to a Palestinian technocratic authority, but insisted decisions about Gaza’s long-term status must involve broader Palestinian consensus. Notably, the group’s statement avoided any commitment to disarmament.
Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi told AFP the proposal lacked “clear terms, criteria, and transparency,” calling it “vague, ambiguous, and lacking clarity.” He said the group awaits negotiations to iron out the details.
The U.S. plan, unveiled on Monday, has been welcomed by several world powers, including Arab and Muslim nations. It outlines a post-war transitional authority in Gaza to be overseen by Trump himself.
Earlier Friday, Trump gave Hamas until Sunday night to respond, warning the group it would face “all hell” if it rejected the plan.
