Hamas Expresses Readiness for Gaza Truce, Immediate Prisoner Exchange with Israel
Hamas says it is ready to end the Gaza war and begin an immediate prisoner swap with Israel as delegations meet in Egypt to discuss US President Trump’s peace plan, including the release of over 1,900 Palestinian detainees.
A senior Hamas official on Sunday said the group is eager to strike a deal to end the Gaza war and begin a prisoner exchange with Israel “immediately,” as delegations from both sides prepare for negotiations in Egypt.
Talks are set to take place in Sharm el-Sheikh after Hamas approved a peace proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump. A Hamas delegation from Doha was expected to arrive in Cairo on Sunday before heading to the talks, according to officials.
“Hamas is very keen to reach an agreement to end the war and immediately begin the prisoner exchange process in accordance with the field conditions,” the official said, stressing that “the occupation must not obstruct the implementation of President Trump’s plan.”
A Palestinian source told AFP the delegations will be housed in the same venue but away from media access, with discussions focused on timelines for Israeli withdrawal, halting military operations, and launching the exchange of captives.
According to Trump’s plan, Israel is expected to release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences, alongside more than 1,700 detainees from Gaza arrested after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, in return for Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
