Hojlund Goal Lifts Napoli to Serie A Top Spot as Milan Held by Juventus
Rasmus Hojlund fired Napoli to a 2-1 win over Genoa, sending the champions top of Serie A. AC Milan slipped to third after Christian Pulisic missed a penalty in a 0-0 draw at Juventus.
Rasmus Hojlund’s late strike secured Napoli a 2-1 comeback victory over Genoa on Sunday, sending the Serie A champions top of the table after AC Milan were held to a goalless draw at Juventus.
Fresh from his midweek brace against Sporting Lisbon, the 22-year-old Dane pounced on a rebound in the 75th minute after Andre-Frank Anguissa’s shot was parried by Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali. The goal marked Hojlund’s fourth since joining from Manchester United.
Napoli now sit on 15 points from six games, edging ahead of Roma — 2-1 winners at Fiorentina — on goal difference.
“It’s my job and the team’s job to win as many games as possible, so it’s important to keep working hard, recovering and focusing on the next match,” Hojlund told DAZN.
Coach Antonio Conte admitted he considered substituting Hojlund due to his recent workload. “He asked if I was tired, but I told him I had energy and was still fresh. I said, ‘yeah, just let me play,’” Hojlund revealed.
Napoli had trailed at halftime after teenager Jeff Ekhator netted his second Serie A goal, but Anguissa levelled in the 57th minute before Hojlund struck the winner.
Napoli held onto first place through the international break after Christian Pulisic blazed a penalty over the bar in Milan’s drab 0-0 draw at Juve. The miss ended Milan’s five-match winning run and dropped them to third, two points off the leaders.
Adrien Rabiot reflected on Milan’s missed chances: “We should have won, we had chances but something was missing. It’s only the start of the season but winning here would’ve been significant.”
Elsewhere, Roma extended their winning run to three games with a 2-1 victory at Fiorentina. Matias Soule and Bryan Cristante scored after Moise Kean’s thunderous opener, while Kean later struck the post as Fiorentina’s winless run continued, leaving them just above the relegation zone.
For Roma, the result was a welcome lift after their midweek Europa League frustration against Lille.
