Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed regret over the persistent political crises in the state, while reaffirming that he remains the governor and is firmly in charge of governance.

Fubara said the beginning of every year of his administration has often been marked by political turbulence, noting that early 2026 came with what he described as a “love letter.”

The governor spoke while serving as Special Guest at the grand finale of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament held in Port Harcourt over the weekend.

He pledged that he would not, directly or indirectly, support any action capable of undermining peace and security in Rivers State, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the top priority of his administration.

“What is important is that I am still the Governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” Fubara said.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the week-long polo tournament, describing the incident-free event as proof that Rivers State is safe for residents, visitors and investors.

“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.

Fubara, however, lamented that the recurring political crises in the state have coincided with the annual polo tournament over the past three years.

“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” he said.

Despite the challenges, the governor assured that his administration would continue to discharge its responsibilities and support individuals and groups genuinely committed to the development of Rivers State.

He also promised that the state government would work towards upgrading the Port Harcourt Polo Club, reputed to have one of the best natural grass polo pitches in the country.

Fubara further urged guests, polo players and foreign participants to enjoy the calm environment of Port Harcourt and help project positive and accurate information about the state to counter negative perceptions.
