IPOB Appeals to 21 Foreign Missions for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has petitioned 21 foreign embassies and international bodies, including the UN, EU, and US, seeking urgent intervention for the release of detained leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, citing health and human rights concerns.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has written to 21 foreign diplomatic missions and international organizations, appealing for urgent intervention to secure the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The appeal, contained in a letter dated November 12, 2025, and titled “SOS – Urgent Global Humanitarian Intervention to End the Unlawful Detention and Torture of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” was addressed to several embassies and high commissions in Abuja.
Recipients include the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Russia, China, Israel, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, as well as the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), African Union (AU), and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to IPOB, the letter builds on previous diplomatic efforts to draw attention to Kanu’s prolonged detention since June 2021, despite what it described as “multiple judicial and human rights rulings” ordering his release.
“This is a global SOS appeal for urgent humanitarian and diplomatic intervention in the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was detained in Nigeria in June 2021,” the group stated.
IPOB noted that both domestic and international bodies, including the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, had called for Kanu’s release, emphasizing that his health condition has worsened while in custody.
“As of now, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health has reportedly deteriorated. His continued detention has raised humanitarian concerns,” the group added.
The organization urged global powers to press for the enforcement of court orders and ensure Kanu’s welfare and medical care. It also appealed for sustained international monitoring of developments surrounding his case.
“We call on world powers to act immediately in support of justice and humanity,” IPOB stated.
