IPOB Calls for Dialogue as Anambra Considers Sanctions on Monday Sit-at-Home
IPOB has called on the Anambra State Government to use dialogue and restraint over Monday sit-at-home observance, warning that sanctions could escalate tension and urging peaceful engagement.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has appealed to the Anambra State Government to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue over the continued observance of Monday sit-at-home in parts of the state.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB reacted to reports that the state government may impose penalties on individuals or businesses that shut down activities on Mondays.
The group described the sit-at-home as a voluntary and symbolic protest observed by some residents, urging authorities to seek understanding and peaceful engagement rather than enforcement.
According to IPOB, peaceful protests and civil actions are recognised features of democratic societies, adding that residents who stay indoors on Mondays do so out of personal conviction.
The group stressed that participation in the sit-at-home is not compulsory and that people should be free to decide whether to open their businesses or remain at home without intimidation.
IPOB also cautioned against setting up enforcement mechanisms targeting those observing the sit-at-home, warning that such measures could escalate tensions in the state.
It argued that addressing public concerns through dialogue and inclusive governance would better promote peace and economic stability than punitive actions.
The statement further urged the Anambra State Government to focus on policies that enhance security, economic activity and social cohesion, while encouraging all stakeholders to act in ways that sustain peace.
IPOB reiterated its call for a lawful and peaceful resolution to issues surrounding its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and reaffirmed its commitment to non-violent engagement.
The group concluded by appealing to both residents and authorities to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tensions in Anambra State.
