IPOB: Simon Ekpa Sentenced to Six Years in Finland for Terrorism Offences
According to Finnish outlet Yle, the judges noted that Ekpa leveraged his “significant social media following” to heighten unrest in Nigeria’s South-East.
The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa to six years imprisonment after convicting him of multiple terrorism-related offences.
In its ruling on Monday, the court held that Ekpa incited terrorism and took part in the activities of a terrorist organisation between August 2021 and November 2024.
According to Finnish outlet Yle, the judges noted that Ekpa leveraged his “significant social media following” to heighten unrest in Nigeria’s South-East.
The three-member panel described him as “an influential member of a militant separatist movement whose goal was to actualise the carving out of a Biafra state from Nigeria.”
The court also found that Ekpa facilitated the supply of weapons, explosives, and ammunition to armed groups in the region “through his network of contacts,” while promoting violence through posts on social media platform X.
Beyond terrorism charges, Ekpa was additionally convicted of aggravated tax fraud and breaching Finland’s Attorneys Act.
As of press time, his legal team has not issued a statement on whether he intends to appeal the verdict.
