Japanese Party to Appoint AI as Leader After Founder’s Exit
Japan’s Path to Rebirth party says it will appoint an AI as its new leader after founder Shinji Ishimaru quit following election losses, marking a first in politics.
A new Japanese political party, Path to Rebirth, announced Tuesday that it will install an artificial intelligence system as its leader following the resignation of its founder, Shinji Ishimaru, after poor election results.
Ishimaru, a former mayor in western Japan, founded the party in January. Despite finishing second in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election with the help of a strong online campaign, the party failed to secure any seats in this year’s upper house elections, prompting his departure.
At a press conference, Koki Okumura, a 25-year-old Kyoto University doctoral student in AI research, said:
“The new leader will be AI.”
Okumura, who recently won a party contest to succeed Ishimaru, will serve as the nominal leader and assistant to the AI. He explained that while the AI will not dictate the political activities of members, it will handle decisions such as resource distribution within the party.
The Path to Rebirth allows its members to set their own agendas and does not have a unified policy platform. Despite media attention, it has struggled at the polls—losing all 42 candidates in the June Tokyo assembly election and all 10 candidates in July’s upper house election.
Details of how and when the AI will be implemented are yet to be decided.
