Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that Nigeria’s democracy is being “suffocated” by reckless conduct within the political space, stressing that politics must never be turned into an arena for disorder. His remarks came as President Bola Tinubu commended Jonathan for helping to keep Nigeria’s democracy standing.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja—an event that also marked his 68th birthday—Jonathan said no government can thrive without the cooperation of its citizens, and no nation can progress without leaders who listen and act with clarity.

He emphasized that leadership should be grounded in responsibility, nation-building and restraint, noting that democratic stability requires civility and genuine accountability from all political actors.

Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” Jonathan said, warning that the surge in hostile rhetoric and aggressive political behaviour was eroding democratic resilience across Africa.

Jonathan also reflected on the experiences that inspired the formation of his foundation, highlighting its decade-long work in diplomacy, governance reform, mediation, peacebuilding and strengthening democratic institutions. He lamented the rising wave of violent attacks and abductions nationwide, urging leaders to take their duties seriously and secure the lives of citizens while preserving democratic order.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu, paid high tribute to Jonathan’s legacy. He described Jonathan’s historic 2015 concession of election defeat as the defining moment of his presidency and a decision that saved Nigeria from a looming crisis.

The highest point of the Jonathan legacy was when he courageously conceded defeat and saved the nation from a precipice,” Shettima said.

He added that Nigeria’s democracy has continued to survive turbulent elections because of statesmen like Jonathan, who place national interest above personal ambition. According to him, Jonathan’s conduct after leaving office has cemented his status as one of Africa’s most respected democratic figures and strengthened the influence of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation across the continent.

Our democracy has survived turbulent election seasons because leaders like former President Jonathan understand that the Nigerian state is bigger than any individual,” he added while conveying President Tinubu’s goodwill.

Newly elected PDP national chairman and former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, also praised the foundation’s growth. He described it as one of Africa’s most respected platforms for peacebuilding, mediation, conflict resolution and democratic development.

We have watched with keen interest the activities of the foundation from its inception to date, and we’ve seen how this foundation has grown to be one of the most respected foundations in Africa,” Turaki said.
