Judgment in Sule Lamido’s Suit Against PDP Over National Convention Postponed

The Federal High Court in Abuja has delayed judgment in the suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, challenging his exclusion from contesting the chairmanship position at the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention.

Justice Peter Lifu, who had earlier fixed Thursday for the ruling, was unable to deliver judgment as scheduled. The court registrar informed lawyers, litigants, and Lamido—who was present in court—that the judgment was not ready, adding that a new date would be communicated to all parties.

On Tuesday, the judge had fixed the matter for judgment after counsel for the parties, including Lamido’s lawyer, Jeph Njikonye (SAN); PDP’s counsel, Omokayode Dada (SAN); Joseph Daudu (SAN) representing other joined parties; and INEC’s counsel, presented their arguments and adopted their written addresses.

Earlier that same day, Justice Lifu had issued an interim order restraining the PDP from proceeding with its planned national convention pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The judge also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to monitor, supervise, or recognise the outcome of any convention conducted while the matter remains unresolved.

Justice Lifu ruled that Lamido’s ex-parte motion had merit, noting that evidence before the court indicated the PDP failed to publish the convention timetable as required by law.

He further held that the balance of convenience favoured the former governor, as excluding him from the chairmanship contest could cause him irreparable harm. The preservative order, he said, was therefore necessary to maintain the status quo until the case is determined.

After allowing parties to regularise their filings, the judge took arguments and adjourned the matter to November 13 for judgment—now deferred until further notice.
