JUST IN: ECOWAS mourns Kwara boat accident victims

Touray commended the rescue efforts of the authorities and expressed confidence that adequate safety measures would be instituted to avert tragic incidents of such magnitude in the future.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray, on Saturday, condoled with families of the boat accident in Kwara State.

“ECOWAS Commission received with shock, the tragic news of the boat accident that led to the death of 100 people and the disappearance of several others in Kwara on June 12,” he was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria as saying.

The president expressed his “heartfelt sympathy” and offered condolences to the bereaved families and the Nigerians.

Touray commended the rescue efforts of the authorities and expressed confidence that adequate safety measures would be instituted to avert tragic incidents of such magnitude in the future.

No fewer than 270 wedding guests were returning from a marriage ceremony in Gboti, Niger State, to the Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara when the boat capsized killing at least 100 passengers.
