Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammed Samaila Bagudo, shortly after he observed prayers at a mosque in Bagudo town on Friday.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the armed men stormed the town on Friday night, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, and whisked the lawmaker away at gunpoint to an unknown location.
Abubakar revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, has immediately set up a joint search and rescue operation involving the Police, Army, and local vigilante groups to ensure the deputy speaker’s safe return.
“In view of the unfortunate incident, we have formed a strong rescue team and they are already combing bushes and forests to rescue him unhurt,” Abubakar stated.
The police spokesperson appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that efforts were in top gear to rescue the abducted lawmaker and restore peace to the area.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding. The Police are on top of the situation and remain committed to protecting the lives and property of all citizens,” he added.
