Kremlin Says It’s Open to Unlimited Talks With US on Ukraine Peace Efforts
Russia says it is willing to hold as many meetings as needed with the US to reach a Ukraine peace deal, after Putin’s talks with Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner ended without a breakthrough, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Russia is prepared to hold as many meetings with the United States as needed to negotiate a resolution to the war in Ukraine, following late-night discussions between President Vladimir Putin and senior US officials that produced no breakthrough.
Putin met for several hours on Tuesday with Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Despite the lengthy talks, neither the US nor Russia announced progress toward a peace deal to end the conflict, now approaching its fourth year.
“We are grateful for the efforts of (US President Donald) Trump’s administration and we are still ready to meet as many times as is needed to reach a peace settlement,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Witkoff and Kushner brought an updated version of a US proposal, following earlier discussions between Washington and Kyiv.
Peskov said the Russian delegation clearly outlined elements of the proposal that were “unacceptable” to Moscow. “This is a normal process,” he noted, adding that it was the first time both sides had a “direct exchange of opinions.”
He also said Russia expects the US to remain discreet about the talks for them to move forward effectively.
Before the meeting, Putin issued a strong statement accusing European governments of trying to undermine peace efforts. European leaders have expressed concerns about being sidelined in negotiations over what is considered the continent’s most serious conflict since World War II.
“They don’t take part in the process because they are still obsessed with the idea of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia,” Peskov said.
