Kwara Government Abolishes PTA Levy, Introduces Annual School Grants
Kwara State has scrapped PTA levies in public primary schools, providing annual grants and free English and Maths textbooks. SUBEB outlines intervention projects including classroom construction, boreholes, and digital literacy upgrades.
The Kwara State Government has abolished the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) levy in public primary schools, replacing it with annual school grants to cover running costs.
Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), announced the decision during the opening of bids for the 2024 third and fourth quarter UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects.
“The Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the stoppage of the payment of PTA in all public primary schools in the state, from Primary 1 to 6. No more PTA payments in Kwara State,” he said.
Prof. Adaramaja also revealed that the governor has approved the provision of English and Maths textbooks for free to all primary school pupils in the state.
The intervention projects will include:
- Construction of classroom blocks with offices and toilets
- Remodeling and renovation of classrooms
- Drilling solar-powered boreholes with tank stands
- Rehabilitation of digital literacy programs
- Procurement of foundational literacy materials for Primary 1
- Fabrication and distribution of 2-seater pupils’ furniture
- Implementation of the Safe Schools initiative in selected local governments
Adaramaja further noted that the governor approved the 2025 counterpart funds for UBEC/SUBEB projects and urged contractors to execute their work according to specifications, warning that substandard work would not be tolerated.
Alhaji Maroof Ahmed, Secretary to the Indigenous Contractors Association, thanked the government for the opportunity, pledging that members would deliver quality services.
Prof. Adaramaja also lauded UBEC Executive Secretary Hajiya Aisha Garba and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the programme.
