La Liga president Javier Tebas has described the cancellation of plans to host a Barcelona vs. Villarreal league match in Miami this December as a “missed opportunity” for Spanish football — even as players, clubs, and fans across Europe hailed its collapse as a win for sporting integrity.

The December 20 fixture, which would have marked the first-ever European league match played abroad, will now take place at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Cerámica as originally scheduled.

According to La Liga, the event’s promoters decided to withdraw after “uncertainty generated in Spain in recent weeks” made it impossible to proceed.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tebas expressed frustration, writing that Spanish football had missed “a historic opportunity to develop, project itself globally, and strengthen its future.”

However, the ambitious Miami plan had been met with fierce resistance from several quarters — including the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE), which organised on-field protests last weekend. Players from every La Liga club stood still for 15 seconds at the start of matches to oppose the idea.

Real Madrid also led institutional opposition, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois warning that moving the game overseas would “adulterate the competition.” Team captain Dani Carvajal reportedly told Tebas that hosting the game abroad would be “a stain on La Liga’s integrity.”

In response, Tebas accused critics of hypocrisy:

“We are appealing to the ‘integrity of the competition’ from those who have been questioning this same integrity for years — putting pressure on referees and managers, constructing distorted narratives, or using political and media pressure as a sporting tool,” he said.

‘This is not the way to do things’

The president of Spain’s Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, criticised the league’s approach, saying the plan lacked transparency and proper consultation.

“Before taking an initiative of this nature — one that could have affected the integrity of the competition — it was necessary to have dialogue and agreement among all participants, including the players and the fans,” he said.

Rodríguez Uribes added that “absolute transparency” and “appropriate regulations” were essential before any such international fixture could be considered, emphasising that Spain should focus on bringing sporting events home rather than exporting them.

‘Seismic victory’ for fans

The AFE issued a statement celebrating the decision, condemning La Liga’s “lack of transparency, dialogue, and coherence” in planning the match.

“The players spoke out unanimously on the pitch to send a powerful message: without players, there is no football,” the association declared.

Fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) also hailed the collapse as a “seismic victory” and urged Italy’s Serie A to abandon a similar plan to host an AC Milan vs. Como match in Perth, Australia, next February.

“Doubling down on this failed idea would be an act of self-inflicted damage — to the league’s reputation, to Italian football, and to the game as a whole,” the group said.
