LASU Warns Candidates Against Fake Admission Offers, Reaffirms Merit-Based Policy

The Lagos State University (LASU) has cautioned candidates seeking admission into the institution to beware of fraudsters claiming they can secure admission in exchange for money, stressing that no staff member has such authority.

The warning was issued on Friday in a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.

She described such claims as fraudulent attempts to exploit candidates’ desperation, warning that the promises were impossible to fulfil.

“No staff member has the authority or capacity to offer admission in exchange for money. Candidates must not be deceived by such false claims. The university refutes, in the strongest terms, any suggestion that admission can be bought,” she stated.

Thomas-Onashile expressed sympathy for candidates who could not secure admission despite strong results but emphasised that LASU would not exceed its approved carrying capacity.

She noted that the institution had observed misleading social media narratives alleging admission racketeering involving staff and stressed that the university could not remain silent.

“Ordinarily, LASU owes no applicant an explanation regarding admission. However, a misleading narrative has emerged on social media, alleging staff involvement in admission racketeering. As a responsive institution, LASU cannot remain silent, for silence could allow misinformation to harden into accepted truth,” she said.

Clarifying the university’s admission process, she explained that LASU Law 2004 (as amended) provides for a merit-driven admission policy, open to both Nigerian and international students, with special preference given to Lagos State indigenes based on a 70-30 guiding principle.

“In line with this principle, LASU has offered admission to candidates of all origins who scored highest in each course, strictly on merit. The university has also admitted qualified and verified Lagos indigenes under supplementary and discretionary categories,” she added.
