ENGLAND — As power and a plethora of economic and political issues are transferred from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Liz Truss today, Britain will rely on predictable and time-honored traditions after months of instability.
The day is anticipated to go as follows:
* Johnson will make his final speech from the Downing Street residence of the prime minister. Count on a politician who, despite all the scandals, may still mount a comeback to use colorful metaphors, a few Latin phrases, and boasts about his own achievements.
* Instead of the customary Buckingham Palace location, Johnson and Truss will visit Scotland to see Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle. Due to her health, the 96-year-old queen has missed a number of official engagements. She doesn’t seem to want to delegate this one, though, as long as the important players will travel to the location where she has been residing.
* Johnson will salute the queen and offer his resignation during a private audience. Truss will then request authorization to establish a government. Even though there is no kissing in contemporary politics, the ceremony is known as “kissing hands.”
* Truss will return to London as the 56th prime minister of the United Kingdom, joining a select group of countries with at least three female heads of state.
