Liverpool are awaiting scan results amid fears that record signing Alexander Isak has suffered a broken leg following an injury during their 2-1 victory over Tottenham, reports said Monday.

The Sweden forward, 26, was injured while scoring Liverpool’s opening goal after a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van der Ven. Having come on as a second-half substitute, Isak was unable to celebrate and left the pitch visibly distressed.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the severity of the situation after the game, saying, “If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing but I cannot say anything more than that. That is just gut feeling and nothing medical… let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon.”

According to The Athletic and Sky Sports, Liverpool fear the injury may indeed be a broken leg, which would sideline Isak for an extended period.

Isak has had a disrupted start at Anfield, scoring three goals in 16 appearances since his £125 million ($168 million) record transfer from Newcastle. A pre-season dispute with Newcastle left him behind in fitness, and his campaign was further interrupted by a groin injury.

Any extended absence would be a significant setback for Slot, with Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not expected back from a muscle injury until early next year. This leaves Hugo Ekitike, who has five goals in his past four games, and the little-used Federico Chiesa as Liverpool’s only senior forwards.

Liverpool, whose Premier League title defence suffered after a poor run of results, have climbed to fifth in the table after extending their unbeaten league streak to five matches.
