For quite some years now, Nigeria has been grappling with economic challenges stemming from corruption, mismanagement of resources, and a heavy reliance on oil exports. However, the crisis had reached its peak, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Families struggled to put food on the table, businesses closing their doors, and dreams are shattering.

At the heart of the crisis was the depreciation of our national currency, the naira. Inflation soared, making basic commodities unaffordable for the average Nigerian. My encounter with a woman at the market gave a glimpse of what ‘many’ average Nigerians go through.

Aisha, a single mother of two, experienced the impact firsthand. She worked tirelessly as a market vendor, selling fruits and vegetables to provide for her children. Every day, Aisha witnessed the desperation in the eyes of her customers.

As prices skyrocketed due to the recent removal of the petroleum subsidy, many had and are making heartbreaking choices between food and other essential needs of clothing and shelter. Aisha, too, felt the burden of the crisis as she struggled to source affordable produce and transport them to her stall. Her meagre profits were quickly being swallowed by the current inflation, leaving her in a constant state of ‘anxiety and sometimes depression’. The crisis is reverberating beyond the confines of the market.

Even the healthcare systems are feeling the strain of the current crisis. Hospitals lacked vital medical supplies, and doctors and nurses were overworked and underpaid; in past months the Association of Medical Doctors threatened to embark on a nationwide strike. Jane, a nurse in a Lagos based hospital; St. Michael witnessed the consequences as it unfolds. She stated during an interview session, “Patients arrived with illnesses that could have been prevented with access to basic healthcare, but the system is crumbling under the weight of the present economic hardship. The economic crisis also exacerbated social inequality. The gap between the rich and the poor widened, with the wealthy becoming wealthier while the poor sank deeper into poverty.

The government, too, is grappling with the crisis, attempting to implement reforms and policies to stabilise the economy with different bills passing different stages at the legislation and others being signed into law.

One good thing is in the face of these adversities, our display of remarkable resilience and resourcefulness. Furthermore, in times of economic crisis, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and neglect our health and well-being, seeking daily survival.

Financial worries, job instability, and rising costs can take a toll on our mental and physical health. However, it’s crucial to prioritise our well-being during these challenging times. By adopting certain strategies and making conscious, “choices,” we can maintain a healthy lifestyle even in the face of an economic downturn.

During an economic crisis, it’s essential to prioritise our basic needs, such as food, shelter, and healthcare. Ensure that you have a stable food supply by creating a budget and sticking to it.

Opt for healthy, affordable food options such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Plan your meals and cook at home to save money and make healthier choices. Additionally, ensure that you have a safe and comfortable living environment and access to necessary healthcare services.

Engaging in regular physical activity is vital for both our physical and mental well-being. Exercise helps reduce stress, boosts our mood, and improves overall health. You don’t need an expensive gym membership to stay active.

Consider low-cost or free options such as walking, jogging, or cycling in your neighbourhood or Local Park. Many online platforms also offer free workout routines and yoga classes that you can follow from the comfort of your home. Get creative and find ways to incorporate movement into your daily routine.

Economic crises can bring a great deal of stress and anxiety. Just as Aisha experienced. It’s important to find healthy ways to cope with these emotions. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help reduce stress and promote mental well-being. Allocate a few minutes each day for relaxation and self-reflection. Engaging in activities that you enjoy, such as reading, listening to music, or pursuing a hobby, can also help distract your mind from financial worries and maintain a positive outlook.

It’s crucial to remember that you are not alone during an economic crisis. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups for emotional support and guidance. Sharing your concerns and seeking advice can alleviate some of the stress and help you find new perspectives.

Additionally, there may be local community organisations or government assistance programs that can provide support with financial and healthcare needs. Don’t hesitate to explore these resources and take advantage of the help available to you.

Managing finances during an economic crisis requires careful planning and budgeting. Assess your income, expenses, and debts to gain a clear understanding of your financial situation. Cut back on unnecessary expenses and find ways to save money.

Look for affordable alternatives, such as buying generic brands or purchasing second-hand items. Prioritise your spending on essential items and focus on building an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. By managing your finances wisely, you can reduce financial stress and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

While it’s essential to take care of your mental well-being, staying informed about the economic situation is also crucial. Keep yourself updated on relevant news and developments that may impact your financial situation. Knowledge about potential job opportunities, government policies, and resources can help you make informed decisions and take necessary actions to safeguard your financial stability. However, be mindful of not getting overwhelmed by constant news consumption, as it can contribute to increased stress levels.

Maintaining a positive mindset is key to navigating an economic crisis while prioritising your health. Focus on what you can control and adopt an optimistic outlook. Instead of dwelling on the challenges, seek out opportunities for personal growth and development.

Use the crisis as a catalyst for making positive changes in your life. Engage in activities that bring you joy and surround yourself with positive influences. By embracing a positive mindset, you can better cope with the difficulties and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
