Mikel Obi Confident Super Eagles Can Still Qualify for 2026 World Cup
Ex-captain Mikel Obi says it would be “a crime” for Nigeria to miss another World Cup, urging the Super Eagles to win their last two games to secure qualification for 2026.
Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has expressed strong belief that Nigeria can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their precarious position in Group C.
The Super Eagles currently sit third with 11 points from eight matches, trailing Benin Republic and South Africa by three points. To secure qualification, they must win their remaining two games against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
Speaking on his Obione Podcast, the 38-year-old football legend said it would be a major disappointment if Nigeria missed back-to-back World Cup tournaments.
“It’s going to be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “We love our football too much. Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games—no excuses.”
The former Chelsea midfielder urged the players to focus fully on the task ahead, setting aside all distractions.
“At this stage, every off-field problem goes out the window. It’s about the players now. They must take responsibility and deliver. Nigerians are counting on them,” he added.
Nigeria will face Lesotho at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday before playing Benin Republic next Tuesday in their final qualifying match.
