Mubarak Bala, President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, has been arrested this afternoon in Kaduna in Northern Nigeria. Two police officers, who were not in uniform took him from his residence. He is currently detained at the Gbabasawa police station in Kaduna. According to local sources, his arrest could be in connection with a charge of blasphemy. A group of lawyers has petitioned the Kano state command to prosecute Mubarak for insulting Prophet Muhammad on his Facebook page. One S. S. Umar signed the petition. And this is how one Yusuf Jnr (@MrZage) commented on the petition on his tweeter account: “Some group of lawyers finally write a petition against that animal Mubarak Bala”. He described Mubarak as ‘an animal’.Besides, there is also an online petition on change.org. Halima Sa’adiya Umar started the petition asking Facebook to close down the account of Mubarak Bala.

All of us at the Humanist Association of Nigeria are deeply worried by the arrest and detention of our president, Mubarak Bala. Mubarak Bala will likely be handed over to the Kano state police command, that will prosecute him for blasphemy, a crime that caries a death sentence under sharia law. We urge the Inspector General of Police, the governor of Kaduna, Mallam Elrufai to ensure his immediate release.

Blasphemy is and will continue to be unacceptable to the Islamic paith and it’s adherents. If he or anyone wants to denounce his faith and join any religion he/she wishes by Nigerian constitution is allowed to do so. And in Islamic teachings “there is no compulsion in religion” especially in secular setting like that of Nigeria.

But why always, those that defected or non adherents wants to attack the scantity of Islamic faith or choose to directly attack Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him. Do they have to do that to really potrayed their defection to other faith? Before you start talking of freedom of expression, let me remind you that, “your liberty stops at the point other person feel threaten of it”.

So, please stops this attack on people’s faith as they do not indiscriminately attacks or mocks those you hold in high esteem.

Is like you are ignorant of the Islamic position on blasphemy. Not only Jesus (Prophet Isah Alaihi Salam), any body that insults any of the prophets of God will be liable to the same punishment as ordained by the Holy Quran.

Why should he be released? Investigation ought to be conducted to determine his culpability in the alleged blasphemy. If a prima facie case is made out, he should be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction to face trial. This is a serious matter capable of trowing the entire Nigerian state into commotion.
